 2014 Communities - UPDATE May

In November 2008 the Big Lottery Fund launched 2014 Communities,
a small grants scheme for small groups.

We want this scheme to be different to anything we’ve tried before, and we want to get as many groups who’ve never thought lottery funding was for them to apply as possible.

Grants of £300 to £1,000 are available to voluntary and community sector groups, sports clubs and schools to increase participation in sport and physical activity. We want to reach people who don’t traditionally take part in sport and physical activity as much as other groups. This means we particularly want to see applications for projects involving women and girls, disabled people, older people, young people and ethnic minority communities. However, if your project doesn’t meet these priorities don’t worry - you can still apply and get a grant as long as you meet one of these outcomes:

  • More people take part in sport or physical activity
  • More people volunteer in sport or physical activity
  • More people and communities are brought together through taking part or volunteering in sport or physical activity

So maybe you’re part of a youth football team who need new training gear or want to hire a professional coach to help out for an hour or two a week. Or perhaps you want to run taster sessions for people who have never played golf before.

Or maybe you are part of a residents’ committee in a sheltered housing complex and want to help older people get active through taking up rambling. You could be involved in a project for ethnic minorities and want to help more people from these communities take up sport or physical exercise.

Even if your days of running round a sports field are behind you, you might have the coaching skills to inspire others in your community - 2014 Communities could cover the costs of volunteering, such as travel expenses.

But don’t be put off if you’re not a natural footballer, gold medal swimmer or a golf fanatic – we can fund a broad range of sports and physical activities and you aren’t limited to the kind of sports that feature in the Commonwealth Games themselves.

Whatever your idea, we want to hear from you, so get in touch or download an application pack.

The application should focus on the children your project will work with and the differences that your project will make for them. You should clearly be able to demonstrate how your project will change the lives of the children involved for the better. Where possible it should take into account their views and involve them in decisions that affect them.

They don't give grants for...

Children in Need... New Small Grant Programme

 http://www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey/grants/apply_scotlandhome.shtml

The Small Grant Programme will offer a more streamlined application and assessment process for applications of £10,000 and under.

Applications can be made for up to 3 years at a time but cannot exceed £10,000 in total. Grants will only be made for one year at a time for holidays.

  • Applications should be for work where a small amount can make a real contribution to the success of the project
  • Applications cannot be made to "top up" large projects where a small grant would make only a marginal impact on the success of the project
  • Applicants can apply for a small grant and a main grant, but are only likely to be successful in exceptional circumstances where the grants are for different projects and they can demonstrate excellent outcomes for children and young people

 2014 Communities

Glasgow  is hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the Big Lottery Fund Scotland wants to ensure that we are providing support to groups who want to benefit from this once in a lifetime opportunity for people and communities across Scotland.

To do this BIG has developed a new funding programme, 2014 Communities, which is focused on building a legacy of well-being before and beyond the Commonwealth Games. 2014 Communities is a micro grant programme aimed at grass roots sports and community organisations. Through the programme BIG hopes to encourage more peopleto take part in sport or physical activity, andtoincrease the numbers of those volunteering in sport or physical activity, and to bring communities together through sport and volunteering.

We would like the projects we fund to reach people who are less likely to take part in sport or physical activities. Our priorities are listed below.

  • Getting more women and girls to take part in sport or physical activity.
  • Getting more disabled people to take part in sport or physical activity.
  • Getting more older people (over 50 years old) to take part in sport or physical activity.
  • Getting more younger people (under 25 years old) and older people to take part in sport or physical activity together.
  • Getting more people from black and minority ethnic communities to take part in sport or physical activity.

Important Information on Awards for All from April 2009

Awards for All (grants between £500 and £10,000) are currently operated as a joint scheme of four lottery distributors: SportScotland, the Scottish Arts Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the Big Lottery Fund. From April 2009, Heritage Lottery Fund will no longer play a role in Awards for All but instead will use their current Your Heritage and Young Roots grant programmes to ensure the continuation of small community grants within the heritage sector. Awards for All will soon have a new application form and guidance notes for use after April 2009.

Check www.awardsforall.org.uk/scotland for the latest information.

You can apply for heritage projects using the current application form up until 31 March 2009. Awards for All will continue to fund heritage projects after April 2009 but all applications will need to demonstrate a strong community focus - i.e. involving and benefiting the local community rather than just members of a heritage group. Applications will need to relate to a project (e.g. not just equipment).

If you need funding between £3,000 and £10,000 you can choose to apply to either Awards for All (£500 to £10,000), Your Heritage (£3,000 to £50,000) or Young Roots (£3,000 to £25,000 - for projects led by young people). It has now been recommend  that you look at the relevant grant programmes for further information and completing a pre-application form online if you need advice on a potential Your Heritage or Young Roots project.

Awards For All

Awards for All gives groups a quick and easy way to get small Lottery grants of between £500 and £10,000.Scotland today has been shaped by the lives of its people over thousands of years. In Scotland we are proud of our landscapes, buildings and vast museum and archive collections, as well as our customs, languages, and cultural traditions. At HLF our aim is simple: to help people preserve and enjoy the shared heritage that has given Scotland its identity. Just think about what Scotland would be like without the Waverley Paddle Steamer, the Scott Monument, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the Treshnish Isles, or the landscape of the Tweed Valley?

Projects can encourage a wide range of community, arts, sports, heritage, health, education and environmental projects.

Funds are available for activities which bring people together, improve their quality of life, encourage them to take part in local activities and help groups to become well organised. These include:

  • putting on an event, activity or performance
  • buying new equipment or materials
  • running training courses
  • setting up a pilot project or starting up a new group
  • running a conference or seminar
  • carrying out special repairs or conservation work
  • advertising your event or group
  • paying expenses for volunteers, costs for sessional workers or professional fees
  • carrying out feasibility studies
  • transport costs

Talk to Lloyds TSB Foundation

Lloyds TSB Foundation hold funding surgeries across Scotland, giving people the opportunity to discuss their application before it is submitted. With over 80 opportunities a year to get face to face support with your application, as well as the option of speaking to someone by phone.

You don’t need to come to a funding surgery – it’s not something we take into account when we assess your application – but generally people who have been to a surgery complete better applications and so are more likely to receive an award.

News on Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland overseas programme

Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland Trustees have reluctantly decided that they are not inviting applications for their overseas programme this year.  The programme will be kept under review, and the decision was reached after a great deal of consideration.  All existing awards will be honoured in full, including multi-year awards.   All other award programmes will continue to run as normal.

All the Trustees and staff at the Foundation are acutely aware of the impact not going ahead with our overseas programme this year will have.  We know that our funding supports work that has a big impact in overseas communities, but that it also helps contribute to the UK operations of the organisations involved.

However it has become clear to us that we are not able to run this programme at a meaningful level this year, so we have taken the very difficult decision not to open it for applications.  We would like to thank everyone for their patience in waiting for this decision, and for the great work they deliver.  Our decision is purely a financial one, and in no way reflects our commitment to and admiration for the great work Scottish charities deliver in fragile communities overseas.   Once our funding levels reach a point where it is viable to run this programme we look forward to reopening it.

We’ve done our best to contact all charities who have applied through this programme before to make sure they are aware of this decision, and have put info on our website.

The next closing date for our main grant programme is 13th July, and we are happy to accept capacity building applications at any time.
